Are you being SMART about your software implementation?

Posted under Blog by Karima El Bilali, Customer Success Specialist

Congratulations! You have found a software that fulfills a gap in your business needs. Now comes the exciting time of implementing the software and reaping the benefits. You may assume that the time for research and big decisions is over, but, some things still need to be considered or put in place to maximize your return on investment.

What do you hope to achieve?

No matter what phase in the purchasing process you are in, never lose sight of what you want to achieve. You are enlisting this software for a purpose; make sure that purpose is at the front of your implementation strategy. Ask yourself, “how will this software contribute to my organization?”

A simple, but effective, way to ensure your software implementation is in line with your company objectives is to define your SMART goals in relation to the product’s ability.

Not familiar with SMART goals, here is a quick overview:

  • S –  Specific: Are your goals regarding the use of the software specific and well defined? How will it fit in with the daily activities of the users?
  • M – Measurable: What metrics will you use to monitor the success of an implementation? Are you seeing an increase or decline in usage over time?
  • A – Attainable or Agreed Upon: All the users and stake holders agree on the usage expectations. Make sure that the users have the proper tools to succeed with the product. For example, if the software requires a certain technology like an iPad, be aware of those extra costs before investing.
  • R – Realistic and Relevant: Make sure your goals with the software are realistic and relevant. A product can only do what it is designed to do. However, a good Software provider should always open to feedback!
  • T – Timely and Trackable: Always have an implementation timeline. When do you believe users should be up to speed with the software? Make sure that progress is trackable!

When you take the time to define these goals, you save yourself from many of the growing pains that can accompany a new software installation. You will enter the implementation phase with your eyes open and your expectations realistic.

Good Luck!
